Experimental Heavy Drinking Treatment Study

The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of using a breathalyzer to facilitate an intervention to reduce alcohol use that requires no in-person contact between the participants and the study staff during the intervention phase.

7 to 8 sessions over the course of 6 months, dependent on extent of participation. This includes a 21 consecutive day experimental period.

Participants will receive compensation up to:

  • $286 for participation to offset time and effort
  • $50 bonus for completing all study requirements
  • An additional $275 based on performance within the study
    • All information is confidential
    • Travel Compensation to Roanoke may be provided
    • Must be between 18 and 65 years of age
    • Currently recruiting people who drink alcohol and would like to cut down or quit
    • Also must be willing to provide a $75 deposit (which can be partially funded by study earnings)

 MINDD – Recruiting adults at risk for prediabetes

Are you or someone you know at risk?

Risk Factors include:

  • Family history of diabetes (parent, sibling)
  • Overweight
  • Inactive Lifestyle
  • Age older than 45
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • History of gestational diabetes
  • PCOS
  • Diet high in sugar and fats

2 visits (approximately 2 hours each) consisting of computer tasks, memory games and questionnaires.

Possible fMRI scan(plus a disc of your brain images!)

Compensation up to $140

Travel Compensation to Roanoke may be provided

Abuse Liability of Reduced Nicotine Content Cigarettes 2

Volunteers ages 18-65 needed for an 6-session confidential cigarette smoking study. Compensation up to $215 (based on extent of participation).

Participation involves:

  • Screening questions
  • Sessions lasting approximately 1.5 hours
  • Smoking and cognitive tasks

THIS IS NOT A TREATMENT STUDY. Females who are pregnant, lactating, or may become pregnant are excluded.

Do you smoke “Light” or “Ultra Light” Cigarettes?

Volunteers ages 18-65 needed for a 4-session confidential cigarette smoking study. Compensation up to $170 (based on extent of participation).

Participation involves:

  • Screening questions
  • Surveys about smoking habits and preferences
  • Computerized purchasing tasks
  • Use of cigarettes: ventilated or unventilated

Theta burst TMS as a tool to change smoking behavior

Adults 18-55 needed for one time research study examining future thinking in cigarette smokers.

If you qualify, participation involves:

  • 1 session lasting ~3-4 hours
  • Receiving magnetic pulses to stimulate regions of the brain
  • Computerized Assessments
  • Being asked to imagine and describe past or future events

Compensation up to $95 based on participation

Travel compensation may be provided.

Participate in a research study about decision making using TMS

This is a research study aiming to assess the effects of transcranial magnetic brain stimulation (TMS) on decision-making and craving in obese individuals.

What is TMS? TMS is a non-invasive procedure involving magnetic pulses to stimulate regions of your brain. TMS is safe and FDA approved. No medication or anesthesia required. TMS is a minimal risk procedure.

If you qualify, participation involves:

  • Transcranial magnetic brain stimulation
  • Computerized assessments
  • MRI Scans
  • Eye-blink Measurements
  • Food Consumption
  • Participation involves 6 sessions
  • Each Session last 1-3 hours
  • Compensation ranges from $30-$320 based on extent of participation
  • This is not a treatment study
  • All information is confidential
  • Travel Compensation to Roanoke may be provided
  • If you qualify, total compensation based on extent of study participation
  • Must be 18-55 years of age
  • Must be eligible for fMRI scanning and brain stimulation
  • Pregnant females will be excluded

Effect of Episodic Thinking on a Real World Drinking Environment

 Do you drink alcohol? Are you interested in quitting or cutting back?

Volunteers age 18-65 needed for an approximately a 4-visit study (approximately 1-2 hours each) with compensation from $15 – $218 based on extent of participation. This study will occur over an approximately 2-month period.

Participation involves:

  • Screening questions
  • Questionnaires
  • Tasks where you may make choices
  • Self-reports of drinking
  • Breathalyzer samples
  • Complete computerized decision-making tasks and answer questions about alcohol use
  • If you qualify, total compensation based on extent of participation in the study
  • Must be between 18 and 65 years of age
  • Pregnant females are not eligible
  • This is not a treatment study.
  • Travel compensation to Roanoke may be provided.

Episodic Future Thinking in Cocaine Users

Adults 18-65 needed for a one-session confidential research study to examine decision-making and craving in individuals who use cocaine.

  • Participation involves:
  • A single session lasting up to 3 hours
  • Decision making computerized tasks,
  • Questionnaires about cravings and preferences
  • Future-thinking task.

Compensation ranges from $10-$50 based on extent of participation. Travel compensation to Roanoke may be provided. Appointments available Monday-Friday 8am-8pm and weekends as needed.
This is not a treatment study.
