Adults at risk for Type 2 Diabetes

The purpose of the study is to look at positive thinking and decision making in adults at risk for Type 2 Diabetes.

Participants will:

  • Receive biometric information, such as HbA1c (blood sugar) and blood pressure measurements
  • Complete memory games, food surveys, and future thinking tasks
  • Complete a two-phase food taste test
  • Complete an fMRI scan (get a disc with images of your brain!)

Eligibility criteria:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Prediabetes (higher than normal blood sugar, though not yet high enough for a Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis)
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure) and/or hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol)
  • MRI eligible

Compensation up to $180 for completing the entire study.

Participate in a research study about decision making using TMS

This is a research study aiming to assess the effects of transcranial magnetic brain stimulation (TMS) on decision-making and craving in obese individuals.

What is TMS? TMS is a non-invasive procedure involving magnetic pulses to stimulate regions of your brain. TMS is safe and FDA approved. No medication or anesthesia required. TMS is a minimal risk procedure.

If you qualify, participation involves:

  • Transcranial magnetic brain stimulation
  • Computerized assessments
  • MRI Scans
  • Eye-blink Measurements
  • Food Consumption
  • Participation involves 6 sessions
  • Each Session last 1-3 hours
  • Compensation ranges from $30-$320 based on extent of participation
  • This is not a treatment study
  • All information is confidential
  • Travel Compensation to Roanoke may be provided
  • If you qualify, total compensation based on extent of study participation
  • Must be 18-55 years of age
  • Must be eligible for fMRI scanning and brain stimulation

Neural Correlates of Choices for Impulsive HIV-risk Behavior in Stimulant Dependence

The purpose of this study is aiming to understand factors that related to risky sexual decision making.

  • Currently recruiting participants that use stimulant drugs such as cocaine
  • Must be between the ages of 18-65
  • Consists of 3-4 sessions
  • Compensation from $120-$150, dependent on extent of participation
  • Optional CD of your brain images
  • Participation may involve
    • Risky choice questions
    • Computer tasks
    • Urine sample
    • Functional MRI brain scan
  • Participants must not have
    • Claustrophobia
    • history of brain injury
    • metal implants
    • be pregnant
    • unmanaged psychiatric disorders

Behavioral economic demand of e-cigarettes as a function of flavor and nicotine absorption

The purpose of this study is to help us learn more about the features of electronic cigarettes that influence economic purchasing decisions.

    • 6-10 sessions, depending on extent of participation
    • Currently Recruiting participants that use both electric and conventional cigarettes
    • All information is strictly confidential
    • Must be between 18-65 years of age
    • Sessions last approximately 1.5 hours
    • Participation involves
      • Screening Questions
      • Blood draws to measure plasma nicotine content
      • Smoking Tasks
    • Compensation can range from $200 to $335, dependent on extent of participation.

Inter-temporal Trade-offs in the Risky Decisions of Cocaine Addicts

This research project seeks to understand, through fMRI imaging, the decision-making processes of individuals who do and do not use cocaine.

  • Two-Session study involving brain imaging
  • If you qualify, compensation ranges from $10-$200 based on length of study and extent of participation
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be eligible for fMRI scanning

    • Recreational cocaine users

Pharmacological Effects on Delay Discounting and Real Time fMRI in Alcohol Dependents

This is a research study aiming to assess the effects of acute medication on working memory skills and decision-making in current alcohol users.

  • A total of 3 sessions
    • Session 1 will last 1-2 hours
    • Sessions 2 & 3 will last 5-6 hours each
  • Participation involves
    • Medical History and exam
    • Computer surveys and assessments testing decision-making and working memory
    • Eyeblink measurments
    • fMRI scans
    • Administration of a medication dose or placebo
  • Compensation is approximately $10-$265
  • This is not a treatment study

  • Three session decision-making study
  • If you qualify, total compensation based on extent of participation in the study

Episodic Future Thinking and Real Time fMRI

Currently recruiting two groups:
1) Social Drinkers

This is a research study aiming to assess your imagination skills inside an fMRI scanner.

  • Compensation is up to $80 for a 3-hour session
  • Participation involves:
    • Decision making tasks
    • Imagination skills tasks
    • fMRI brain scan – you’ll receive a CD with images of your brain to take home!
  • This is not a treatment study
  • Pregnant females are not eligible
  • All information is confidential
  • Travel compensation to Roanoke may be provided
  • If you qualify, total compensation based on extent of participation in the study
  • Must be between 21 and 65 years of age
  • Participants may be invited for repeated sessions

Experimental Heavy Drinking Treatment Study

The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of using a breathalyzer to facilitate an intervention to reduce alcohol use that requires no in-person contact between the participants and the study staff during the intervention phase.

    • 7 to 8 sessions over the course of 6 months, dependent on extent of participation. This includes a 21 consecutive day experimental period.
    • Participants will recieve compensation up to:
      • $286 for participation to offset time and effort
      • $50 bonus for completing all study requirements
      • An additional $275 based on performance within the study
    • All information is confidential
    • Travel Compensation to Roanoke may be provided
    • Must be between 18 and 65 years of age
    • Currently recruiting people who drink alcohol and would like to cut down or quit
    • Also must be willing to provide a $75 deposit (which can be partially funded by study earnings)

Decision-Making in Current Alcohol Users

This is a research study aiming to assess the effects of memory skills training in current alcohol users.

  • Compensation is up to $45 for a 3-hour session
  • Participation involves:
    • Computer surveys and assessments (Some of which will be completed in an MRI Scanner)
    • Questions about alcohol and drug use
  • This is not a treatment study
  • All information is confidential
  • Travel compensation to Roanoke may be provided
  • Complete computerized decision-making tasks and answer questions about alcohol use

Theta Burst TMS as a Tool to Change Smoking Behavior

This is a research study aiming to assess the effects of brain stimulation on decision-making and craving in current cigarette smokers.

  • Compensation ranges from $20-$370 based on extent of participation
  • Additional bonuses for task performance may be provided
  • Participation involves
    • Brain Stimulation

  • Participation involves 6 sessions
  • Each session lasts about 2 hours

Narrative Theory and Eyeblink

We are looking for volunteers 21 – 65 years of age to participate in a one-session research study who drink alcohol.

  • Compensation ranges from $10-$60 based on extent of participation
  • Participation involves
    • Eyeblink measures

    • Questions on alcohol & drug use
  • Participation involves 1 session lasting between 2.5 – 3.5 hours
  • This is not a treatment study

Are you or your sibling currently using OR in treatment for alcohol use? Do you have a family history of
substance abuse?

We are recruiting participants that are 18 years or older for a sibling research study.
